The science
Traditional water-based coolants frequently exceed the thermal limit that separates the efficient core boiling point (A) from the inefficient Critical Heat Flux (KHF). KHF is synonymous with the condition Departure from core boiling point. When this condition occurs, a layer of vapor bubbles is formed adjacent to the hot spots in the engine (B). Steam dissipates less than 1 / 30th of the heat dissipated by water, quickly leading to overheated metal and premature detonation. (see picture)
